Nursing homes and care homes both provide round-the-clock care and support for people who may struggle to live independently. However, nursing homes employ registered nurses who remain on-site 24 hours a day. By contrast, residential care homes employ carers who are trained to provide help with personal care tasks. Residential care homes are not permitted to provide any nursing care. Nursing homes are therefore able to provide a higher level of care and support for people with more complex medical needs. Dual-registered care homes, such as KYN, accept residents who require basic support with day-to-day living as well as those who require nursing care.
Nursing care, delivered or supervised by qualified nurses, is a type of support for people who need help with ongoing medical needs. This may include disabilities or chronic health conditions requiring advanced treatments or regular clinical input. Dementia care is specialised care designed for people living with dementia, who may have more complex cognitive support needs. It focuses on supporting emotional and physical wellbeing, helping the person to maintain their identity, dignity and independence.
Nursing care is a broad term referring to medical care and support performed or overseen by a registered nurse. The type of nursing care a person receives should be tailored to their own unique health needs. For example, it may involve things like intravenous therapy, wound dressing, orthopaedic care, tube feeding, stoma care or physical therapy. As well as administering treatments, nursing care usually involves assessing a person's care and clinical needs, devising and monitoring an individual's care plan, managing symptoms and making medication changes.
Though it is often associated with older adults, a person of any age may need nursing care. It is suitable for anyone who has a complex medical need requiring more support than a personal carer can provide. For example, they may have a sensory impairment, physical or learning disability, or a progressive condition such as cancer or dementia.
